Joel’s faith in Christ is at the core of his being. He enjoys staying fit by competing in sports, exercising, and maintaining a healthy and balanced diet. However, he takes an even more holistic approach to sports and fitness. Joel believes elite athletes must train hard, eat the proper nutrition, as well as be intentional, not neglecting, to develop their spiritual muscle.
He understands that athletes can grow stronger physically and even mentally, but without the proper spiritual disciplines, they will waste away inwardly. Joel believes that when life is aligned with God’s principles for living, people will thrive- not only on the court, field, or in the arena, but in their very lives.
Joel has a Doctorate in Education from Southeastern University (2018), a Master of Arts degree in Intercultural Studies from Fuller Theological Seminary (2010), and Bachelor of Arts degree in religion from Vanguard University (2007). He is also an Ordained Minister with the Assemblies of God.
He has traveled extensively, has lived on three continents and is fluent in two languages. Currently, Joel’s missional call is being lived out in Southern California as a pastor, college professor, and tennis coach. Joel’s love for people and for sports have merged to form a unique platform, allowing him to train/mentor athletes and coaches in order to help them integrate their faith within the athletic context.
Joel and his wife, Bernadette, have three sons; each of whom they seek to disciple with love, integrity, and grace. Even at their early ages, their boys have shown great athletic potential. However, Joel and Bernadette aim to help keep Christ at the center and know that their character is the gold to be won at the end of the day.
